All you need to know before buying a watch winder

All manufacturers of automatic watches suggest a minimum TPD (Turns Per Day) for their timepieces.

Please be aware that we are discussing the MINIMUM TPD, as it is common for the TPD to be higher during regular use; particularly for athletes, the TPD may rise up to 3x or more without causing any harm to the main spring. This is due to the fact that all automatic watches manufactured in recent decades feature a slipping clutch that safeguards the mainspring from over-winding or damage. 

Consequently, properly designed watch winders cannot harm the movement of an automatic watch unless the winder has a magnetic effect on the watch.

Re: Which watch winder to buy

Once you have determined how many watches will be wound by the watch winders, the next step is to decide whether the winder(s) will be kept in a safe or cupboard, or be displayed prominently in a room.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the proper use of a watch winder.- Consider the following to decide whether to purchase a watch winder:

• Investing in a winder is advisable for watches with multiple complications, which include time, date, moon phase, etc and perpetual calendar, as should the watch stop when not being worn, it may require some effort to reset it to the correct time and functions.

• If you own a collection of watches, it may be advisable to think about using winders.

• And finally, you might want to limit the use of your timepiece for special occasions only and keep it on a watch winder until worn again

A watch that is worn daily will need servicing sooner than one that is worn only from time to time.
An overhaul service typically ranges from 0 to 00 for the average luxury timepiece, usually needed every 4 to 6 years with daily wear.
Watches with only Hour and Minute hands can be easily reset to the current time when they stop. The act of rewinding and resetting adds to the enjoyment of interacting with such an exquisite timepiece. 

Therefore, for watches with just Hour & Minute hands, we recommend against using a winder that keeps it constantly ticking; instead, it’s best to wear it for a day or so at least once a month.
